A click on a Google search ad in Malaysia usually costs between RM1 and RM6. Across the nine Malaysian search accounts we managed between 22 July and 19 October 2026, the cheapest clicks came in at RM0.83 and the dearest averaged RM5.61, on about RM61,000 of spend. You can start with any budget you like, since Google sets no minimum, but a test that tells you anything useful usually needs RM1,500 to RM3,000 a month.
Judge a campaign on what each enquiry or sale costs you. The price of a click matters only as part of that number. This guide covers how Google charges you, what Malaysian businesses pay by category and how to set a monthly budget.

How does Google decide what you pay?
Every search runs a small auction. You set the most you are willing to pay for a click, and Google weighs that bid against the quality of your ad and landing page to rank you. Then comes the part most owners never hear about. According to Google's own explanation of actual cost per click, you pay only what is needed to beat the advertiser ranked below you, which is often far less than your maximum bid.
So an ad that Google rates as more relevant pays less for the same position than a weaker ad.
Budgets work on a daily average. Google's budget rules let a campaign spend up to twice the daily figure on a busy day, but you are never charged more than 30.4 times the daily budget in a month. Set RM50 a day and the most you can be billed in a month is RM1,520.
Which Malaysian businesses pay the most per click?
Published benchmarks show which industries cost more, but they overstate what you will pay in Malaysia. The widely quoted WordStream and LocaliQ 2026 benchmarks, built from more than 13,000 search campaigns, put the average click at USD 5.42. That is about RM22 at the current exchange rate of roughly RM4.08 to the dollar, which is between four and twelve times what the Malaysian accounts below paid.
Our own numbers from the last 90 days are closer to home, grouped here by type of business.
| Type of business | Cost per click we saw (RM) | Benchmark cited elsewhere (RM) |
|---|---|---|
| Online stores (bedding, footwear, children's products) | 0.83 to 1.81 | ~16.90 (shopping and gifts) |
| Service businesses and consultancies | 2.32 to 3.59 | ~23.95 (business services) |
| Schools and health clinics | 4.62 to 5.61 | ~19.60 to ~25.20 (education, health) |
| All nine accounts, pooled | 1.82 | ~22.10 (all industries) |
Nine accounts is a small sample, so treat these as a working range. A cheap click is also not automatically a good one. The online stores pay the least per click and convert the fewest of those clicks into sales.
What monthly budget do Google Ads need?
Set your budget by deciding how many enquiries you want each month and multiplying that by what an enquiry costs in your industry. The diagram shows the sum for a service business with an RM3 click and a landing page that turns 8% of visitors into enquiries.
That is why we treat RM1,500 to RM3,000 a month as the floor for a single service in one city. Below that, a month brings too few clicks to show which keywords convert. Competitive categories such as schools, clinics and property need more, because each click costs more and fewer of them convert.
Why does one lead cost RM25 and another RM350?
Cost per lead depends on what you count as a lead, because a form fill, a WhatsApp message and a booked visit are priced very differently. In our accounts, a service business paid RM24 to RM28 per enquiry, a health clinic about RM60 per booking request, and international schools RM160 to RM350 per admissions enquiry. A school place is worth tens of thousands of ringgit a year, so paying RM350 for one enquiry can still be cheap.
The benchmark figure for comparison is USD 66.69 per lead, about RM272, which WordStream reports fell for the first time in five years. Malaysian costs sit well below it, but the right comparison is your own margin. Work out what a customer is worth before you decide a lead is too dear, or run the numbers in our break-even ROAS calculator.
Google Ads or Meta ads: which costs less?
Meta reach is cheaper. We cover the numbers in our guide to Facebook and Meta ads costs, where a click runs about RM2 to RM3. Google clicks can cost more, but the person searching "aircond service Cheras" already wants what you sell. Meta finds people before they search, and Google catches them when they do. Most businesses that sell a considered purchase end up running both.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a minimum budget for Google Ads in Malaysia?
No. Google sets no minimum spend, and you can run a campaign on a few ringgit a day. In practice a budget under about RM1,500 a month rarely collects enough clicks to show which keywords work.
What is the average cost per click on Google Ads in Malaysia?
Across nine Malaysian accounts we ran in mid-2026, the pooled average was RM1.82, with individual accounts ranging from RM0.83 to RM5.61. Online stores sat at the low end and schools and clinics at the high end.
Should an agency manage my Google Ads?
If you spend a few thousand ringgit a month and have time to check search terms weekly, running it yourself is reasonable. Once spend or the number of campaigns grows, a manager usually pays for the fee through lower cost per enquiry. Our guide to marketing agency costs covers how fees are charged.
Where should you start with Google Ads?
Google Ads in Malaysia cost a fraction of the global averages. Judge the spend on cost per enquiry and what each enquiry is worth to you. If you want a straight read on what your search ads should cost, our performance marketing team can review the account, or you can talk to us directly.
